I bought the walnut mute. It looks great. Unlike many of the mutes out there today, it has a much more woodsy and gentle sound, which I am liking. Low notes speak very easily. This is one of the less expensive of the expensive mutes.
I want to love this mute… This mute allows the musician to express the timbered sound from soft to levels that reach the farthest distance of any hall. This mute is beautiful, from 10 feet away highly flamed or figured. Up close the open hole is out of round, elliptical, one of the Koa laminates is warped and pushing up. Since I have already shaped the cork strips to fit the horn, I’ll refrain from asking to return, it looks to be thrown together in hurry or knowingly defective pushed out the door anyway. I won’t be offering it to my colleagues for close inspection, to embarrassing at $230.
I purchased on of these mutes directly from Mr Snyder before I ever saw them for sale in the states. This mute is absolutely beautiful...in craftsmanship and in sound! I've owned or tried most of the mutes available and this one is amazing! Check with Tony about which woods will work best with your type of horn.... I have a Geyer/Knopf style and he recommended the Cherry...sounds great!
