Translated from German:
If the piece is to be performed with piano accompaniment, the piano reduction from a standard edition may be used.
The present re-distribution of parts seeks to combine a responsible approach to the original score with the greatest possible ease of execution.
It originated in 1982 out of the sheer necessity of surviving—as the first horn player—a dress rehearsal and two concerts on the very same day. Not a single note has been omitted; on the contrary, reinforcements have been added. The 3rd and 4th Horn parts now bear greater responsibility; the subtle adjustments to dynamics and phrasing, as well as the suggested breath marks, represent a distillation of experience drawn from over one hundred performances of this version. My heartfelt thanks go to Gustav Borggrefe for the music typesetting and to Dieter Walter for the smooth and uncomplicated publication process.
May this edition help to make this wonderful and unique treasure of our horn literature accessible to a wider circle of horn players.
