There are few things more fun than playing in a horn ensemble! As a horn player, you have to love the epic sound of the Vienna Horns or The London Horn Sound, to name a few. In Hanover, Germany, where I have my hom studio, we started to regularly play horn octets several years ago inspired by that sound. Nowadays each term finishes with a large ensemble concert.
The new students usually adapt fast to the style of playing, incorporating our tradition of sound colour, intonation, articulation, balance, and so on. Horn ensemble playing, therefore, is a great way to learn the skills of section work in an orchestra.
You are holding in your hands a great picce of music arranged for horn octet by Michele Schiatti.
Michele was a student in my studio, and early-on showed outstanding talent and instinctive feeling for transcribing orchestral music for horns. All of the pieces in this series of publications have been played in numerous concerts, in several countries to delighted audiences. Enjoy!
