During World War II, Dodgson served in the Royal Navy. From 1947 to 1949, he studied at the Royal College of Music, where he later taught composition. From 1957 he has broadcast regularly on BBC Radio. In 1986 he became chairman of the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain, for which he has written several pieces.
