Dear Horn Players,
With this booklet, I would like to make a small contribution toward a more relaxed approach to horn playing. The exercises are suitable for university students as well as for amateurs and school-aged pupils. Please keep the following points in mind while practicing: Focused and Calm Practice:
I recommend practicing in a quiet environment; this helps to enhance concentration and focus on the act of music-making. Whenever possible, schedule specific practice times to increase consistency and efficiency.
Quality over Quantity
Rather than practicing for hours on end, shorter sessions—e.g., 30 minutes—are often more effective and sustainable, provided they are conducted with full concentration. Incorporating breaks is also a crucial factor. Goal-Oriented Practice:
Set specific goals for each exercise—for instance, improving finger technique or flexibility.
These exercises should also be practiced using the mouthpiece alone. Incorporating a Metronome and Tuner:
Occasionally practice the exercises with a metronome to develop a better sense of timing and rhythm. Always begin the exercises at a slow tempo and gradually increase the speed.
Use a tuner to regularly check your intonation (for example, during Warm-up Exercises No. 2 or No. 3) in order to further train and refine your ear.
Good, Relaxed Posture:
Ensure that you maintain an upright, relaxed posture. Your shoulders should be loose, your back and head held straight, and your music stand should not be set too low. When seated, both feet must remain in contact with the floor; do not cross your legs, and allow your thighs to slope slightly downward.
Vary your practice routine by alternating between standing and sitting to simulate different performance scenarios (e.g., playing in an orchestra, performing as a soloist, etc.). One final tip:
Record yourself while playing, and then listen to the recordings at your leisure. This has the advantage of allowing you to focus solely on listening.
Enjoy!
